How can I save money on my private medical insurance?

Your health insurance premiums will reflect the amount of cover you have, with more cover warranting a higher premium. There are ways to cut the cost of your health insurance premiums without reducing the cover in your policy.

Discount schemes include:

  • Co-payment: Reduce you premiums by agreeing to pay a percentage of costs in the event of a claim
  • Six-week wait: Agree with your insurer that if you can be treated by the NHS within six weeks you will be. If the NHS cannot provide treatment within six weeks you will go private immediately.
  • Reduced hospital cover: Only include local hospitals of your choice in your policy and exclude hospitals you don’t need.
  • Increase your excess: A higher excess will reduce your monthly premiums

Does health insurance cover pregnancy?

Pregnancy is not defined as an illness so health insurance will not cover private healthcare for routine pregnancies. If you want private healthcare during your pregnancy and childbirth you will need to pay for the cost yourself. In some cases, women who have had health insurance for a certain period may be covered for any complications arising from pregnancy and childbirth.

Can health insurance cover me for cancer treatment?

Some health insurance policies will have an option to include comprehensive cancer cover and can provide certain treatments such as stem cell transplantation, biological therapies, reconstructive surgery and hormone therapies. Patients with a basic form of cancer cover may be covered up to a pre-agreed annual limit such as £30,000.

Are pre-existing conditions covered by health insurance?

Health insurance will not cover any pre-existing conditions. However, a policy that has a Moratorium plan could provide cover for pre-existing conditions in the future.

What happens in a medical emergency?

In the event of a medical emergency you will be treated on the NHS in Accident and Emergency even if you have health insurance. Once your condition has stabilised then you can be transferred to a private hospital or ward and receive specialist treatment.
